Essential What is an Anecdote? Why the Plural is not Misinformation

/images/34.jpg

What is an anecdote? What’s the plural of anecdote? A popular doctor on X (Twitter) posted that the plural of anecdote is misinformation. I guess the doctor thought it was clever…it got many likes and reposted several times, but in my head, it didn’t make sense. What annoyed me was its blatant inaccuracy. The plural of anecdote is not misinformation. The plural of anecdote is not data. The plural of anecdote is anecdotes. Anecdotes do what they do, and they don’t do what they don’t do. I am recording a longer form Causes or Cures episode on this soon. While that cooks, I will toss out a few quick reels and shorts. Yes, I will use kitchen props. Of course I will. 😉 In the full episode I will dig into what anecdotes really are: personal data points wrapped in story. I will share a few of my own, talk about why storytelling is wired into the human experience, and make the case that sharing lived experience can be a powerful public mind-body health tool when we handle it with care. Somewhere along the way the word anecdote got cast as the bad guy in certain academic circles. That view is stunted. The flip side is just as sloppy: grabbing one dramatic story and running it as if it were established scientific fact. When we lessen anecdotes to good or bad, we flatten reality to fit the social media attention span. We can do better. Let us give anecdotes the nuance they deserve and learn how to use them wisely. What is an anecdote? The Plural of Anecdote is Not Misinformation.
